Spectracon the logical choice for umicore

Making gold from mobile phones. Sounds like sorcery, but at Umicore Hoboken, this is an everyday reality. We were engaged for the engineering and construction of a motor control centre for the extension of one of their production lines. And the multinational in materials technology very consciously opted for a brand-independent solution. Project manager Alejandro Jimenez and sales and marketing director Koen Pellaers explains why.

Koen: “We have been working for Umicore for more than twenty years. During this period we built a lot of electrical panels for their various locations. This time, the demand was for a much larger order for their Hoboken site, where they refine and recycle precious metals. In other words: they recycle a.o. gold and silver from old mobile phones, laptops, autocatalysts, industrial products… For an expansion of their activities we were asked to design and build a motor control center for them.”

Alejandro: “And for the MCC, they opted very specifically for the brand-independent Spectracon. This is a series of system panels for a variety of applications such as low-voltage distribution, motor control and process control. It is a modular system that offers a great deal of flexibility in the construction of MCC panels. And allows you to com- bine variously sized compartments with each other.”

Koen: “What does such a brand-independent MCC mean in concrete  terms? Well, that we as panel builders are free to determine which brand we choose for each component. This allows us to formulate the best solution without regard to brands. That meant an opportunity to fully exploit our expertise.”

Alejandro: “But that is not the only reason that Umicore opted for Spectracon. Extra motivation: IDS technology for contacts. This enables an arc-free zone as the energy from the vertical bus section is brought to the individual drawers. Or in more simple terms: no sparks when you switch.”

Koen: “And actually, there was another reason why Spectracon was the logical choice here. It is an enormously compact system. In this sense, it saves space: we were able to accommodate many compartments in a very small space. As a result we had to install one cell less in Umicore. This also makes a huge difference in the price.”

Alejandro: “All of this meant that Spectracon was the right choice here. And we at P&V were the logical choice as panel builders. Because such a certificate – and we can testify to this – is something you really have to earn. We at P&V are also the sole licence holder in Western Europe”

Koen: “We werken al meer dan twintig jaar voor Umicore. In die tijd bouwden we al heel wat elektrische borden voor hun verschillende vestigingen. Deze keer kwam de vraag in kader van een grotere opdracht vanuit hun site in Hoboken, waar ze edele metalen raffineren en recycleren. Of concreter: ze herwinnen onder meer goud en zilver uit oude gsm’s, laptops, autokatalysatoren, industriële producten… Voor een uitbreiding van hun lijnen, mochten we voor hen een motor control center ontwerpen en bouwen.”

Alejandro: “En voor die MCC kozen ze heel specifiek voor het brand-onafhankelijke Spectracon. Dat is een reeks systeemborden voor uiteenlopende toepassingen als laagspanningsdistributie, motor controle en procescontrole. Spectracon is een modulair systeem dat een grote flexibiliteit biedt bij de bouw van MCC-borden. En dat toelaat dat u compartimenten van verschillende afmetingen met elkaar kan combineren.”

Koen: “Wat betekent dat concreet, zo een brand-onafhankelijke MCC? Wel, dat wij als bordenbouwer per component vrij zijn om te bepalen voor welk merk we kiezen. Spectracon laat ons toe om over de merken heen te kijken wat de beste oplossing is. Dat betekent dat wij onze expertise volledig kunnen uitspelen.”

Alejandro: “Maar dat is niet de enige reden dat een Umicore voor Spectracon kiest. Extra motivatie: de IDS-techniek voor contacten. Die laat een arkvrije zone toe als de energie van de verticale bussectie naar de individuele schuiven wordt gebracht. Of simpeler gezegd: u trekt geen vonken op het moment dat u schakelt.”

Koen: “En eigenlijk was er nog een reden waarom Spectracon hier de logische keuze was. Het is namelijk een enorm compact systeem. In die zin is het plaatsbesparend: we zijn in staat om veel vertrekken weg te werken op weinig plaats. Maar het resultaat daarvan is dat we bij Umicore ook een cel minder moesten plaatsen. Wat dan ook weer enorm scheelt in de prijs.”

Alejandro: “Dat alles maakte dat Spectracon hier de juiste keuze was. En wij van P&V de logische keuze als bordenbouwer. Want zo’n certificaat – en wij kunnen ervan meespreken – moet u echt verdienen. Wij van P&V zijn dan ook de enige licentiehouder in West-Europa.”
